Union Square

Holiday Displays in San Francisco 2017 - Union SquareVisit Union Square in the heart of Downtown San Francisco and see 83ft tall Macys Christmas Tree. The department store sponsors the tree every year and along with its own magnificent displays at their store across the street, it’s the most iconic symbol of the holidays in San Francisco. Also in Union Square during the holidays you can ice skate on the outdoor rink which opened on November 1st and will be there until Mid January. The tree lighting ceremony for 2017 will take place at 5:30pm on Friday 24th November.

Pier 39

Holiday Displays in San Francisco 2017 - Pier 39

Pier 39 has teamed up with Disneyland Resorts for their 2017 Holiday Celebrations. The tree lighting celebration takes place on Sunday November 19th with a day full of events taking place with the finale at 6pm when the switch is flipped to illuminate the 60ft Christmas Tree. See some of your favorite Disney Characters and sing songs and embrace the holiday spirit. Below is a schedule of events:

City Hall

Holiday Displays in San Francisco 2017 - City Hall

City Hall is famous for its color displays. Whether its the rainbow colors during Pride, the blue and gold during The Warriors play off runs or the orange lights to celebrate the Giants World Series games, it is rarely without some kind of display. During the holidays they bring out the festive green and red colors along with the Christmas Tree across the street on civic center plaza. You can see the display above in a photo taken during the Superbowl 50 celebrations which took place in San Francisco in 2016. Inside City Hall you can see the “World Tree of Hope” Christmas tree which stands at 23ft and is decorated with origami cranes which have wishes printed or written inside from people from all over the world. Famous contributors to the tree have been President Barack Obama, Mayor Ed Lee, Courtney Cox and Nancy Pelosi.

City Skyline

As well as the main holiday displays featuring Christmas Trees, many of the buildings in the city have their own tributes to the Holiday Season. The Embarcadero Centers are illuminated with over 15 thousand lights, and in Justin Herman Plaza they have an outdoor ice rink. The lighting ceremony takes place on Friday November 17th from 4pm – 7pm and will include a fireworks display as well as a free performance of Disney on Ice. Another sign of the holidays is the beacon on top of the Transamerica Pyramid building. The best views of the skyline is from Treasure Island as you can see from the photo above.

Holiday Night Tour

Holiday Displays in San Francisco 2017 - Lights Tour

You can visit all of the displays above with an Open Top Holiday Tour of San Francisco operated by City Sightseeing. Tours start on December 1st and run until December 30th. Tours start from Fisherman’s Wharf and feature sing a longs of holiday classics, festive quizzes and fun commentary as you ride around the city taking in its displays.

Ghirardelli Square Tree Lighting Ceremony       

 Ghirardelli Square on Fisherman’s Wharf will hold its annual tree lighting ceremony on November 24th from 4pm – 8pm. There will be face painting, live music, Santa and more. For more information visit www.ghirardellisq.com

Fairmont Hotel Gingerbread House

Every year the lobby of the Fairmont hotel is taken over by a huge edible gingerbread house along with a 23ft Christmas Tree. This years Gingerbread House is set to be even bigger than last years 2 storey high Victorian. When finished it will be 25ft in height, 35ft wide and 10ft in depth. Guests can see and smell this amazing display from November 25th.

Hyatt Regency Hotel Snowfall

In the atrium of the Hyatt Regency Hotel on the corner of Market and Drumm street you can watch the snowfall while keeping warm indoors at the same time. Snow falls daily in the atrium adjacent to the front desk at set times. The display runs from November 17th 0 December 31st and falls at 3pm, 5pm and 7pm.

Tom and Jerry House

Located at 3650 21st street in the Castro/Noe Valley area of San Francisco is the Tom and Jerry House.  It’s probably the most impressive residential display in the city and features a 65ft high Christmas tree surrounded by massive wrapped gifts. The centerpiece of the display are the huge stuffed stockings with the names Tom and Jerry on them.  For more information and picture click here
